Grey and mild, with rain reaching the Lake District later
A cloudy Sunday across North West England, but largely dry for most. Low cloud and hill fog cling to the Cumbrian fells, Morecambe Bay and the Pennines this morning, while Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire are less murky but still mostly grey. From early afternoon, thickening cloud brings outbreaks of mostly light rain to the Lake District, becoming more persistent on the high ground into the evening and tonight. Elsewhere it stays dry, with perhaps the odd brighter interval over the Cheshire Plain.
It is mild for early October, with highs of 15C to 18C in lowland areas, warmest in Cheshire and Merseyside, and 10C to 13C on the fells and Pennine tops. Tonight stays cloudy and very mild, with lows of 11C to 14C, and rain over Cumbria becoming a little steadier around the Lake District while the south and east of the region stay largely dry.
A south to south-westerly breeze freshens through the day. Peak gusts are typically 12 mph to 18 mph inland by midday, with 18 mph to 25 mph along the Cumbrian coast and over the hills. By evening, exposed Irish Sea coasts, the Lake District and Pennine tops could see gusts of 20 mph to 30 mph, though sheltered inland areas stay much calmer.
